About the Artist

Artist Statement

After a long hiatus from painting, I was compelled to reconnect to my artwork through the confinement and difficulties of the 2020 pandemic. Over the past several years I have focused on developing a daily painting discipline, continuing to unlock my personal style and exploration of medium. Painting alla prima using a limited pallet I strive to stay loose and increase my understanding of color. Some of that work is included here. I invite viewers to experience my personal connection to the subjects I paint and hope to share the healing power of the brush. 

Born: Columbiana, Ohio, 1962

Originally from a small town on the Ohio/Pennsylvania border John and his five siblings were guided from an early age to a love of wildlife, flower and leaf. The tug of a fish and the smell of a campfire are both strong reminders of those early years. After graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1982, he and his future wife and business partner Amy moved to Colorado to pursue a career in design. Together, over the next 35 plus years, they built a successful graphic design business based in Denver. Gradually, John began to reconnect with the experiences of his youth as a welcome respite to the daily grind and deadlines of the corporate world. Those early experiences in woods and fields were a rough template that continues to be defined by the streams and open country of Colorado and the West. He lives with Amy, his wife of 40 years, and their daughter Nora in Denver and South Park Colorado.
